Semifinalists

of the more than 1.3 million
students who took the college

They represent less than
one percent of U.S. high
school seniors. The number
of state semifinalists is
proportional to the state’s
percentage of the national
total of graduating seniors.
As
semifinalists, the students
will have an opportunity
to compete for one of the
8,200 Merit Scholarship
awards worth $33.9 million
that are awarded by the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation.
To become finalists, they
must have a record of high
academic performance, be
recommended by their school
principal and earn SAT scores
that confirm their test
performance. Approximately
15,000 semifinalists advance
to the finalist level.
Commended
Students placed among the
top five percent of those
taking the test. There are
about 34,000 Commended Students
throughout the nation.
