MOORESTOWN
FRIENDS KINDERGARTEN CLASS
CELEBRATES
LUNAR NEW YEAR
MOORESTOWN,
NJ – The Moorestown Friends School
kindergarten class taught by Meredith Newman
celebrated the lunar New Year by sharing
with students the way the holiday is celebrated
around the world.
The
students learned about the Chinese zodiac
and the traditional red envelopes with money
that are given out at the lunar New Year.
Students were told they should sleep with
the envelope under their pillow for 14 days,
until the festival of the lanterns, to bring
them good fortune in the new year.
They
also learned the proper way that boys and
girls bow in Korea, a tradition that is observed
at the new year to honor ancestors and parents.
Some
students and their parents wore traditional
clothing from other lands.
A
highlight of the celebration was the opportunity
to welcome the new year in the Chinese and
Korean languages, and then to sample foods
associated with the holiday.
Below are a few photos from this event.
