MOORESTOWN FRIENDS SPEAKER TO DISCUSS GLOBAL WARMING

MOORESTOWN, NJ -- Moorestown Friends will host Dr. Anthony J. Broccoli, associate professor of environmental sciences at Rutgers University, who will discuss the science and impact of global warming at 4 p.m.  Mon., Nov. 21 at the Moorestown Friends Meeting House. His presentation is free and open to the public.

Dr. Broccoli is a former research meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration, associate editor of the Journal of Climate and a member of the International Commission on Climate. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meteorology from Rutgers and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers.

Dr. Broccoli will present information on the scientific controversies surrounding climate change and explain his reasons for concluding that both human and natural causes are bringing about changes in our climate that should be of great concern to us all.

After his presentation, Dr. Broccoli will respond to audience questions.

Global warming -- the increase in the global average temperature – has garnered renewed attention recently, as some in the scientific community attribute the increased severity of recent hurricanes including Katrina and Wilma to its effects. The proponents of this view note that higher ocean temperatures lead to more intense storms. Others in the scientific community attribute the severity of the storms to natural cycles in sea surface temperatures.

Humans contribute to global warming through the buildup of greenhouse gases from power plants, oil refining and auto emissions.
