Alumni children, faculty, staff and trustees gathered on the Middle/Upper School steps for a photo at the conclusion of the 225th Anniversary Convocation.

MFS kicked off the 2010-11 school year with a 225th Anniversary Convocation on Tuesday, September 14.  Keynote remarks were provided by National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) President Patrick Bassett. Also providing remarks were NAIS Vice President for School Information Services Mark Mitchell (MFS Class of 1986), Clerk of the School Committee (Board of Trustees) William Guthe, and New Jersey State Senator and MFS alumni parent Diane Allen, whose husband, Sam Allen, is a member of the MFS Class of 1957. Hosting the ceremony and providing concluding remarks was Head of School Larry Van Meter, MFS Class of 1968.

A special surprise during the ceremony which wowed the students was an airplane flyover with a banner reading "Happy 225th Moorestown Friends." Chinese Teacher Kathy Wang led the crowd in speaking "Celebrate 225 years" in Mandarin Chinese.

In Memoriam

Former faculty member and alumni parent John D. Geary of Kentucky died on June 29 at the age of 72. He graduated from Drexel University in 1961 and received a master’s degree in education from Temple in 1967. Jack was a scholar and educator whose greatest joy was working with young people. He moved to Louisville, KY in 1988 to join the faculty at Louisville Collegiate School as both high school instructor and college counselor and taught there until 1995. He was a member of the National Association for College Counselors and from 1994 to 1997, he served as president of the Kentucky College Counselors Association where he was instrumental in establishing scholarships for inner-city and rural students in the state. In recent years, he resided on his farm where he raised Angus cattle and participated in equestrian sports. In 2007, he travelled to Oyugis, Kenya to visit his church-sponsored orphanage. While there he installed a water purification system bringing, for the first time, fresh water to over 60 orphans. He is survived by his wife, Julie, his daughters, Jill Louise Geary Patterson ’86 and Jan Elizabeth Geary Michaelree ’87, and his sister. His former wife, Louise Geary, taught English at MFS.
